Buccal Massage: Deep Intra-Oral Release

Beyond the Surface

While our signature facial massage focuses on the surface, buccal massage goes deeper. By working on the facial muscles both internally and externally, this technique addresses deep-seated intra-oral tension that traditional massage often misses.

Clinical Relief Meets Total Relaxation

Buccal massage offers a unique middle ground for our patients. It is significantly more relaxing than our clinical TMJ-focused treatments, yet it remains highly effective by directly addressing the internal muscles of the mouth. This makes it an ideal choice for those who carry stress in their jaw but are looking for a more restorative, soothing experience.

What to Expect

During a buccal massage, your therapist uses a manual technique (performed with gloves) to access the muscles from inside the oral cavity. This allows us to:

Soften Hypertonic Muscles

Release the masseter and buccinator muscles from both sides.

Relieve Persistent Tightness

Address tension that cannot be reached through external massage alone.

Support Nervous System Regulation

Provide a deep sense of calm through slow, intentional manual therapy.

Is Buccal Massage right for you?

This treatment is highly recommended for individuals experiencing:

General jaw tightness or “heaviness” in the lower face

Stress-related clenching

A desire for deep facial relaxation without the intensity of a standard TMJ session

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a Buccal Massage?

“Buccal” refers to the cheek. Unlike a traditional facial massage that works only on the surface, a buccal massage involves a manual technique where the therapist works on the muscles of the face from both the inside and outside of the mouth. This allows us to access deep-seated tension in the masseter and buccinator muscles that external work simply cannot reach.

How does it differ from a clinical TMJ treatment?

While both involve intra-oral work, our TMJ treatments are often highly focused on specific dysfunction and joint mechanics. Buccal massage is designed to be a more rhythmic and restorative experience. It addresses the same internal muscles but prioritizes softening hypertonic tissue and nervous system relaxation, making it more soothing than a standard clinical session.

Aestheticians often advertise buccal massage for “sculpting” or as a “natural facelift”—is this the same treatment?

The manual techniques used are essentially the same; however, the focus and the way we describe the service differ. As Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs), our scope of practice is focused on the health of the soft tissues, joints, and the nervous system. While the aesthetic industry may use terms like “sculpting” or “facelift,” RMTs do not make claims regarding changes to physical appearance or cosmetic outcomes. Instead, we focus on the clinical benefits: releasing hypertonic (tight) muscles, improving circulation, and relieving intra-oral tension. Our goal is to improve how your facial muscles function and feel, rather than focusing on how they look.

Is it covered by my Extended Health Benefits?

Yes. Because this treatment is performed by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) and focuses on the structural health of the facial muscles and tension release, it falls under your RMT coverage. A receipt will be issued for your insurance provider just like a standard massage.

Is it uncomfortable?

Anytime we treat tight muscles there can be a level of discomfort- but our primary focus is relaxation. While the sensation of having your cheek muscles massaged from the inside is unique, the pressure is always adjusted to your comfort level. Most patients find the release of deep tension to be incredibly relieving and find it easier to relax during this session than during more intense clinical jaw work.

What should I expect during the appointment?

Your RMT will use sterile, medical-grade gloves to perform the intra-oral portion of the massage. We focus on slow, intentional movements to soften the tissues of the cheeks and jaw. The treatment is entirely manual—we do not use tools—ensuring a precise and personalized touch.

Who can benefit from this treatment?

It is ideal for anyone who:

– Carries stress in their face or jaw.
– Experiences “heavy” or tight facial muscles.
– Clenches their teeth but finds clinical TMJ work too intense.
– Wants to support facial circulation and muscle health in a deeply relaxing way.
