Why TMJD Massage?

Massage therapy can relieve this tension by releasing muscles on both the outside and inside of the jaw, as well as those in the face, scalp, and upper neck. Consistent treatment helps decrease chronic tension, allowing the jaw to function with more fluid, pain-free motion.

What To Expect At Your First Treatment

Relieve chronic tension and reclaim comfort with a treatment specifically designed for the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and the muscles of mastication. If you struggle with jaw clicking, nighttime grinding (bruxism), or persistent tension headaches, this focused session offers clinical relief by addressing the root causes of jaw pain.

The Clinical Assessment

Before we begin the manual therapy, we conduct a specialized assessment to understand your unique jaw mechanics. This ensures the treatment is both safe and effective for your specific needs.

Range of Motion Testing

We measure your “maximal comfortable opening” to identify any restrictions or deviations in the jaw’s path.

Palpation & Trigger Point Mapping

We identify hypertonicity (excessive tightness) in the masseter, temporalis, and pterygoid muscles.

Postural Integration

Since the jaw is part of a “tension chain,” we assess the alignment of your cervical spine (neck) and shoulders to see how they may be contributing to jaw stress.

Targeted Manual Therapy

Once we have mapped out the tension, we move into the corrective phase of the session:

External Release

This specialized treatment uses a clinical combination of myofascial release and Swedish massage to target the external musculature of the jaw, head, and neck. By addressing the “tension chain” that connects the jaw to the upper body, this session is designed to alleviate the symptoms of TMJ dysfunction, bruxism (grinding), and chronic tension headaches. External treatment alone can be quite effective at relieving TMJ pain.

Intra-oral

Working with the patient’s comfort level and using clinical gloves, we apply precise pressure to the muscles inside the mouth, combined with external myofascial release to melt away stubborn facial tension. This “inside-out” approach allows us to reach the deeper pterygoid muscles that external massage alone cannot access.

Cervical Alignment

We incorporate targeted work on the suboccipitals and upper neck to release the structural “anchors” of your jaw pain.

Decompression

Our goal is to reduce joint compression, ease the “locked” sensation, and restore a natural, pain-free range of motion.

Homecare

After your treatment, your therapist will  provide you with a personalized set of exercises, postural adjustments, and self-care habits provided after your treatment to help maintain your results. With TMJ dysfunction, homecare is an essential part of treatment, as it helps prevent the delicate muscles from immediately tightening back up after your treatment.

Hydrate & Rest

– Drink Water: Like any deep tissue work, hydration helps flush out metabolic waste and keeps the fascia (connective tissue) supple.
– Monitor Your Jaw: For the next 24 hours, try to avoid “testing” your jaw by opening it excessively wide or eating very crunchy/chewy foods (like steak, gum, or hard apples).

Patient Education

Your therapist will show you techniques and stretches that you can do at home. By incorporating these small, mindful movements into your daily routine, you help “lock in” the progress made during your session and actively prevent tension from returning.

Heat or Cold Therapy

Using both heat and cold to help with post treatment pain, as well as helping with pain associated with TMJ dysfunction

Posture Education

Your therapist will help determine things in your life you can alter to help prevent TMJ pain from continuing. Small changes such as desk set up at work, or seeing a dentist for a night guard, can make a big difference in your overall pain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is TMJ massage?

TMJ massage is a focused clinical treatment designed to release tension in the muscles used for chewing and jaw movement. It targets the Temporomandibular Joint and surrounding areas like the temples, jawline, and neck to reduce pain, clicking, and restriction.

Does it involve working inside the mouth?

It can, but it is always based on your comfort level. Using clinical gloves, I can perform intra-oral massage to reach the pterygoid muscles. These muscles are located inside the cheek and are often the primary culprits for jaw “locking” and deep-seated pain. They are nearly impossible to reach effectively from the outside alone.

Is the treatment painful?

Because the jaw holds a significant amount of stress, some areas may feel tender or “intense” during the release. However, I work strictly within your comfort zone. We use a communication scale to ensure that while the work is deep and effective, it remains manageable and therapeutic.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

– Makeup: It is best to arrive with a clean face or minimal makeup, as we will be working directly on the skin of the cheeks and temples.
-Meals: Try to avoid eating a very heavy meal immediately before your session, as we will be manipulating the jaw area.
Recent Procedures: If you have had recent dental work, facial injections (like Botox), or oral surgery, please let me know during the assessment. *Please wait a minimum of 3 weeks after any botox or fillers*

What should I expect after the session?

Most clients feel a significant “lightness” in their face and an improved range of motion. You may experience some mild muscular soreness for 24–48 hours, similar to the feeling after a deep tissue massage. Staying hydrated and practicing the gentle “home care” movements we discuss will help the results last longer.
